Unmatta Bhairava / Varahi Matrika

Varahi Matrika Shakti

Varahi is extensively revered in the Dakshina Chara, Vamachara, Kaulachara, and Aghora Achara traditions. Known for punishing enemies and eliminating evil forces, she is a fierce deity. In Kasi, devotees can only have the darshan of her padukas.

There are many misconceptions about Varahi. For instance, the Lalita Sahasranama stotram refers to her as Danda Natha and attributes the killing of Vishukura to her, which contradicts the Brahmanda Puranas that state she killed Vishanga, while Vishukra was slain by Shyamala. Only Tantras should be considered as evidence. In Buddhism, she is revered as Vajra Varahi or Kirata Varahi. She is said to have emerged from Goddess Kalaratri's Tamas.

Varahi manifests in two divine forms: Dhurma Varahi and Ugra Varahi. Dhurma Varahi has a pleasant appearance, while Ugra Varahi has a fierce one. Ugra Varahi is the revered deity of Kasi, protecting the populace within the precincts of Main Kasi, and is the village deity of Varanasi.

Varahi Matrika - Preferred time of Worship

It is advisable to worship Varahi specifically at night or during Brahma Muhurat. In Kasi, people revere her as Ugra Varahi and believe that she wanders the sacred place at night until 3:30 AM. They only permit Pada Darshan at the temple, which is open from 4:30 AM to 8:30 PM, as Mukha Darshan is strictly not allowed. A couple who attempted Mukha Darshan died, reinforcing the belief that it is best to please her during the night. The optimal time for families to visit is between 6:30 PM and 8 PM.
