Abhisheka Priya Shivaha

"Shiva lingam is the symbolic representation of Lord Shiva. Performing Abhishekam to a Shiv Ling and Lord Shiva is a sacred and traditional Hindu ritual that involves the ceremonial bathing of the Shiv Ling with various items. The ritual is not just about the physical act but also about the spiritual connection with Lord Shiva.

Procedure

  1. Prepare the Platform:

    Clean the altar or the place where the Shiva Lingam is situated.Place the Shiva Lingam on a clean platform.

  2. Arrange the Offerings:

    Arrange the any of the items (based on the purpose of doing abhishek) mentioned in the list below.

  3. Apply Vibhuti:

    Apply Vibhuti on the forehead as Tripundram. The tripundram should not cross your eye-brows.

  4. Light Deepam (Lamp):

    Light deepam with cotton wicks and oil chanting “Om Rudraya Agni Murthaye Namah.”

  5. Begin the Abhishekam:

    Begin the ritual by chanting prayers or mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva. As you chant, start pouring each liquid over the Shiva Lingam using a vessel or your hands.

  6. Place Bilva Leaves or Vibhuti:

    Place Bilva leaves on the Shiva Lingam after completion of Abhishek. According to Shastra, the head portion of Shiv ling cannot be left empty.

  7. Apply Vibhuti and Sandalwood Paste:

    Apply vibhuti as tripundram followed by sandalwood paste as a dot in the middle line of tripundram and kumkum on that dot after abhishek puja.

  8. Perfumed Water:

    Sprinkle rose water or perfumed water over the Lingam to add a pleasant fragrance.

  9. Perform Archana:

    PerformArchanato the Shivling with these flowers and leaves.

  10. Naivedyam(Food Offering):

    Offer food you prepared alongside fruits like Blackplum,Pomegranate, Lemon, Indian plum or Red date, Guava, Citron, Banana, Gooseberry, Mango, and Jack fruits for receiving higher benefits.

  11. Aarti:

    Conclude the Abhishek pooja by performing aarti (waving of lights).

  12. Atma Pradakshina:

    Perform Atma Pradakshina in a series of 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 times. "Atma Pradakshina" could be interpreted as a symbolic act or a spiritual practice where a devotee walks in a circular path around their own self contemplating the divine within.

  13. Cleanup:

    Collect the liquids that have been poured over the Lingam and use them as sacred water or share them among the participants.
